Cycle to Class
WHAT IS CYCLE TO CLASS?
Cycle to Class is an initiative that increases access to education for vulnerable children living in remote areas of Sub-Saharan Africa through the provision of bicycles. Founded in 2016, Cycle to Class takes a holistic approach to children’s non-school enrolment by tackling its root causes – household poverty, distance to the nearest school and harmful socio-cultural attitudes.
WHAT IS THE ISSUE?
Around the world, more than 59 million children of primary school going age and 69 million adolescents (aged 12-15) have either dropped out or have never enrolled in school. More than half of these out-of-school children of primary school age live in Sub-Saharan Africa. In spite of the various efforts and progress made to achieve universal primary education by 2015, nearly half of all out-of-school children in Sub-Saharan Africa will never enter a classroom.
WHY BIKES?
In relation to geographical disparities, children in rural remote areas often live quite far away from the nearest formal primary school. This means that they might miss out on having an education or even if they are enrolled in school, they attend school infrequently, arrive to school late or tired due to long travelling distances while combining their responsibilities in the household. This can affect children’s schooling outcomes, drop-out rates or children having to re-sit grades. Children who walk long distances to the nearest primary school are also more at risk to sexual abuse, harassment and insect bites in some areas. Thus many parents prefer that their children stay at home instead.
With a bike, children’s travelling time can be reduced by 75% (World Bicycle Relief). For example, a walking journey to school that would normally take 45 minutes can be reduced down to approximately 12 minutes.
